The girl is believed to have brought the barb to St Peter’s Primary School in Dunbar Street for show and tell.
She got the potentially poisonous barb stuck in her hand about 9.20am and ambulance paramedics were called to treat her at the school.
The girl was taken to John Hunter Hospital in a stable condition.
