THE story linking subsidence modelling for the proposed Wallarah 2 mine at Wyong to the effects of mine subsidence at Mount Sugarloaf overlooks some important facts (‘‘Wallarah 2 report slammed for ignoring Wallsend slip’’ Herald 30/8).

The Wallarah 2 mine is three times deeper than the West Wallsend colliery, and has much simpler structural geology and surface topography.
Different longwall panel widths, alignments and layout are proposed.
Wallarah 2 is also in an area known to be free of major geological faults and dykes, and the mine plan takes this into account.
We also plan to only mine part of the thickest coal seam, and a fraction of the overall coal resource in the exploration area.
This will dramatically reduce potential subsidence effects.
There are major geological and landform differences between Wallarah 2 and West Wallsend mine.
