But the latest award won by Morisset Newsagency hints at how the business has changed.
The newsagency has won the 'Technologies' section of the Newsagents Association of NSW and the ACT's 2012 Awards for Excellence.
Proprietors Gary and Sue Stoddart said the category recognised newsagencies which sold technological products, and which used technology best in the running of their business.
"We still get called a paper shop a few times every day," Mrs Stoddart said.
But it is the sale of computer-related products, in particular, that increasingly drives the business.
"We sell a lot of computer supplies, mobile phones, GPS devices, cameras, USBs, portable hard drives and wireless products," Mr Stoddart said.
The newsagency, located opposite the railway station, now also sells bus and train tickets, as well as hot coffee - among an array of non-traditional 'paper shop' items.
But for all of the changes that are occurring in the newspaper industry, Mrs Stoddart said customers still felt strongly about the "tactile experience" of sitting down and reading their newspaper.
"And if we ever run out of the Lakes Mail, people get a bit stroppy. They just love their local paper," Mr Stoddart said.
