But after a dispute with the land owner, the future of the Albert Street garden is uncertain.
At the Croatian Wickham Sports Club, the garden has transformed a bare plot into a suburban oasis, where herbs, pumpkins and chickens flourish.
But since the club's board rejected a proposed five-year management plan earlier this month, the garden has gone virtually untended.
Licensee and manager Pavo Sudaric said no one was being forced to leave but admitted the club could not approve the plan.
As a result, the committee has stood down.
A working party is scrambling to find a solution to keep the not-for-profit organisation afloat.
Former Fig Tree Community Garden president Bill Robertson said he was frustrated at the board's decision.
"If you want move forward on the site we need new ideas," he said.
"That's why the committee has stepped down, we're hoping another group can come in and maybe get a clear hearing with club management."
¦ Garden supporters are invited to an emergency meeting this Thursday, May 3 at Croatian Wickham Sports Club, 6pm.
