The New Lambton Heights hospital will expand to include three additional theatres and another 30 single-patient rooms under plans revealed by owner Healthscope on Monday.
The hospital, billed as the city’s largest private health provider, includes 171 beds at present.
Newcastle Private Hospital general manager Michael Mitchell said the three-phase plan would add consulting rooms, three theatres including an angiography suite, 12 extra critical care beds and 225 car spaces to the site.
The Croudace theatres would also receive a facelift, with the project split into phases in a bid to minimise disruption through the building process.
“The demand on health services in the greater Newcastle area is steadily increasing," Mr Mitchell said.
"The development will ensure that we can provide our patients with state of the art healthcare well into the future."
Construction drawings are underway, Healthscope said in a statement, while analysis and preparation of the land will begin shortly.
A tender process will be called from there, with the first phase of the project expected to begin early next year.
Healthscope, which bought the Lookout Road hospital in mid-2007, said the first 1000m2 of consulting rooms would be available for at doctors and surgeons who have supported the existing Newcastle Private Hospital.
