Newcastle City police said the man, 31, was heading east in a Holden Commodore about 9.30am when he "failed to negotiate a bend".
The man's vehicle crossed to the opposite side of the road and hit a tree, police said. It's believed there were other vehicles nearby who stopped and called for help. Lake Macquarie police were nearby and responded quickly, but arrived to find the man had died. He was the only occupant in the vehicle.
The road was closed for more than three hours on Sunday morning as specialist crime scene police examined the scene.
As police were removing the vehicle there was another car accident a short distance away on the Cessnock Road off-ramp at Freemans Waterhole.
Investigations are continuing and police will prepare a report for the coroner.
Anyone with information about the crash is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
