Carnival Australia executive chairman Ann Sherry said moving passengers to and from the existing temporary terminal in Carrington was crucial to attracting more liners.
“It’s up to the city to determine its own infrastructure. But I look at that [Stockton] ferry, and the opportunity is there to ferry people to the city,” Ms Sherry said.
“Clearly, into town is where you want to take people.”
The Queen Elizabeth’s visit brought an estimated $500,000 to the Hunter, and Newcastle MP Tim Crakanthorp said an expanded terminal would be an investment.
Port of Newcastle, the consortium holding a 98-year lease over port operations, says the only place wide enough for cruise ships is the current terminal at the Channel Berth.
