SG Ball prop Pasami Saulo joined illustrious company this week when he was awarded the Newcastle Knights’ most prestigious junior prize, the Carlson Club-Andrew Johns medal.

Past winners include Johns, Brett Kimmorley, Owen Craigie, Anthony Quinn, Dane Tilse, Kade Snowden, Jarrod Mullen and Sione Mata’utia.
Saulo, who helped Newcastle’s under-18s reach the grand final qualifier, also took out the SG Ball Excalibur Club players’ player and player-of-the-year awards.
He is contracted to Newcastle until at least the end of 2018. Other honours went to Sam Mataora’s brother, Harold Matthews outside back Teva, who received the Carlson Club Danny Buderus encouragement award.
The Harold Matthews player of the year was Jock Madden.
Tom Starling and Saulo were joint winners of the under-18 player of the year.
* ROOKIE Knights five-eighth Brock Lamb will undergo surgery for the first time in his career to repair the ankle syndemosis he suffered playing against Wests Tigers on Saturday.
Lamb is facing eight weeks on the sidelines.
Senior playmaker Jarrod Mullen is making slow progress after his recent hamstring surgery. He has started upper-body training but still needs a crutch to walk.
* NEWCASTLE coach Nathan Brown feels his team are receiving no favours from the NRL’s referees.
“When we are losing close games we are not getting any of the 50-50 calls,’’ Brown said this week.
“When you are at the bottom of the table you don’t get them. We have also had results where we have had some bad scores put on us, which is due to our inability to compete at times around the ruck.’’
