Daniela Griffiths runs Newcastle’s Little Bone Broth Co and swears by the health benefits of bone broth. The best part is, you can make it yourself.
“As the weather gets cooler it is important to be nourishing your body with immune boosting foods like bone broth,” she said.
“Bone broth has been used for thousands of years for food and in healing remedies.
“It is a staple in traditional cuisines and cultures around the world, and I’m sure we can all remember being prescribed a hot bowl of grandma’s chicken soup when we’re feeling under the weather.”
There isn’t really a wrong way to make bone broth, she said. The most basic bone broth recipe requires organic chicken bones or grass-fed beef bones with organic root vegetables like carrot, onion and celery, and herbs and spices. Throw everything into a large stockpot or slow cooker and simmer in filtered water with a splash of apple cider vinegar on the lowest possible heat for 18 to 24 hours or longer to extract all the nutrients. Strain and serve.
It can be consumed in various ways.
“We suggest drinking bone broth hot like you would a tea or coffee. We like to add spices like turmeric, cumin or chilli flakes and freshly chopped herbs from our garden to our daily cup of broth,” Griffiths explained.
“Bone broth can also be used in cooking and makes a delicious base for any soup, and adds extra flavour to casseroles and slow cooker dishes.
“You can also substitute bone broth for water when cooking rice or quinoa, or add it to the kids’ mashed potato. We even add it to our green smoothies.”
She discovered bone broth a few years ago while dealing with a health issue.
“I started researching about the healing benefits of food and quickly learned that to fully understand your health, one of the essential places to get to know is your gut and what is happening inside it,” she said.
“Bone broth was one of the first foods I introduced into my wellness routine.”
Little Bone Broth Co opened for business earlier this year and offers a bone broth home delivery service to the Newcastle area. It also pops up at markets from time to time.
“Our signature product is our convenient single serve organic chicken bone broth jar, which is sold as a frozen product,” Griffiths said.
“Our bone broth is made using locally sourced organic ingredients and filtered water so there are no hidden additives or nasties.”
