The Entrance beach closed after the sighting on Friday morning.
Council lifeguards believe the shark was a bronze whaler, estimating it was roughly 3.5 metres long.
It was spotted chasing a school of fish off the beach.
Central Coast Council said all other beaches remain open but The Entrance would stay shut for “at least several hours”.
“Lifeguards will reassess the beach over the next few hours and it will only be reopen when deemed to be safe,” the council said in a statement.
“Lifeguards at nearby beaches are being extra vigilant to ensure the safety of swimmers.”
