Teenage stars inspire Glory's defeat

The two 18-year-olds scored in the second half of the rescheduled round-six match and played a part in striker Tara Andrews’s opening goal.

The win moved the Jets to nine points, four behind fourth-placed Melbourne Victory with three games left.

The Jets were never threatened by a Glory side that was beaten 11-0 by Sydney FC on December 3.

But Jets coach Clayton Zane was disappointed his side did not win more convincingly.

‘‘We knew we had more quality on paper and I would have preferred a better performance,’’ Zane said.

‘‘It’s three points at the end of the day, so we’ll take them.’’

Zane said the continued improvement of his midfield was a positive element of the win in front of a crowd of 377.

‘‘We’ve got a bit more bite in the midfield now,’’ he said.

‘‘It would have been nice to try and keep 11 on the field and get a few more goals to get the girls’ confidence up before we head into Christmas and the Sydney match.’’

The Jets played the final 22 minutes one player short after midfielder Hannah Brewer drew her second yellow card for kicking a ball away.

She received her first yellow card from rookie referee Katie Patterson in the 38th minute for a sliding tackle.

Zane made two changes from the side that lost 2-1 to W-League leaders Canberra United on Sunday.

Andrews moved into the starting line-up for suspended striker Lisa De Vanna and Gema Simon returned from knee tendonitis to play left wing, pushing Linda O’Neill to the bench.

Andrews rewarded her coach’s faith by scoring a poacher’s goal in the 22nd minute when she pounced on a blocked strike from Bolger.

The Jets went two up in the 55th minute when van Egmond won the ball inside the 18-yard box and cut it back for Bolger to finish.

Five minutes later Brewer looped a ball over the top for van Egmond to outmanoeuvre Glory goalkeeper Lydia Williams to make it 3-0.

Katie Holtham headed home a free kick for the Glory.
