A new strain of rabbit calicivirus, RHDV1K5 will be released across 226 sites in NSW, including in Lake Macquarie and nearby local government areas.
Council’s acting manager of waste, environment and rangers, Derek Poulton, is reminding owners of pet rabbits to have them vaccinated before the virus is released.
“To help prevent domestic rabbits from becoming infected pet owners should consult their vet and follow vaccination recommendations,” Mr Poulton said.
The release of the virus is part of the state’s rabbit control program.
