NSW Lotteries said it was only able to sign off on the win after the registered ticket holder, who was overseas last week, confirmed his identity on Tuesday.
A lotteries spokesman said the syndicate, which uses the name “Ten Tenors”, and is made up current and former Newcastle City Council staff, “immediately erupted in cheers” when they found out about their win, with each member of the syndicate to receive $1,111,111.10.
All members of the group, which chose to remain anonymous, said they would use the unexpected pay day to help their families and wipe their debts clean.
The group said the Ten Tenors syndicate started about a decade ago.
It had ten foundation members, but one member later decided to leave.
The ticket was sold at Georgetown Newsagency and was the only division one winner in the February 28 Oz Lotto. NSW Lotteries initially had trouble contacting the winner, prompting it to launch a public appeal.
