Ms Cameron was elevated this week to the rebranded chief executive officer role from her previous job as director of community development, with unanimous backing from councillors.
Lake Macquarie mayor Kay Fraser praised the appointment.
“With her leadership and the hard working staff of council, Lake Macquarie is in very good hands,” Cr Fraser said.
Liberal councillor Kevin Baker, whose faction pressured Mr Bell to stand down quickly when he announced his retirement in April, said Ms Cameron would be “a fantastic asset for council”.
Since Mr Bell vacated the role it has been shared between senior staff, most recently the council’s director of city strategy Tony Farrell.
