The next phase of the $660 million Revitalising Newcastle program comes after a year laying the groundwork, program director Michael Cassel said.
“This includes creating new pedestrian and vehicle access points between Hunter Street and the harbour, and consultation with local businesses and residents to determine their needs during construction,” Mr Cassel said.
“It’s now time to get on with installing light rail tracks.”
Work will begin between Auckland and Darby Streets, moving utilities and telecommunications while reconfiguring the road to accommodate the tracks.
Traffic will temporarily be diverted via Honeysuckle Drive, Wharf Road and King Street until the light rail work finishes.
It is scheduled for completion by the end of the year.
“Locals can be reassured that Newcastle will remain open for business,” Mr Cassel said.
“Some short term disruption is unavoidable, but in less than two years light rail will be built, commissioned and up and running and locals will be reaping the benefits of frequent, reliable light rail services connecting key activity precincts and breathing new life into the city centre.”
