As a $64 million residential development in Wickham is released to market on Saturday, around $100 million in development applications for the inner city are on exhibition at Newcastle City Council indicating Newcastle’s apartment boom shows no signs of slowing down.

Harbourside development Lume of 154 apartments sold out in five days last month, the East End project is reportedly selling well and there are several construction sites underway or near completion at other locations throughout the city.
Eaton On Union is the latest residential development to hit the market. The 114-apartment complex is a mix of one, two and three-bedroom residences across two towers of 13 and 11 storeys.
Apartments in the Thirdi Group development at 7 Union Street go on sale on Saturday. It is the company’s second project for Wickham after delivering West End, currently under construction, to market.
Another Wickham development for Thirdi Group, Hannell Street Apartments, is one of three DAs on public exhibition.
The building costs have been estimated at $39 million for the development at 38 Hannell Street, 2-4 Bishopsgate Street and 13 Dangar Street. It will be a 15-storey development of 174 residential apartments and ground floor commercial.
The first stage of a $125 million proposed redevelopment of the Wickham Woolstores from 33 to 57 Annie Street is also on exhibition.
The concept plan for the whole site is the redevelopment of the three heritage Woolstore buildings, the construction of an additional two buildings and the creation of communal spaces and parkland.
In total there would be 310 residential apartments across four of the buildings. The proposal says there are ongoing discussions being held with the Newcastle Community Arts Centre and WOTSO Workspace with a view to occupying part of the site.
The DA for the first stage of the proposed development is for 100 residential apartments and the building costs are estimated at around $38 million. The DA has been lodged on behalf of City Plan Services.
Railway Lane Apartments, with estimated costs between $60 million to $70 million, has just been approved at 73 Railway Lane with construction set to begin next year. It will be 10 storeys with 150 residential units and two commercial spaces and Blake Organisation is behind the development.
A further DA for approximately $20 million worth of works has been lodged on behalf of two owners for an apartment complex at 495 and 501 Hunter Street.
Two buildings have been proposed, one of 11 storeys and the other 15 with a total of 92 residential apartments and two ground-floor retail tenancies. The DA also includes landscaped communal open space.
