FlyPelican will begin direct services to the South Australian capital on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays in partnership with Alliance Airlines.
The Williamtown-based firm may also add more services on Flying Fokker aircraft, which seat 80 or 100 passengers, if the demand exists.
FlyPelican chief executive Paul Graham said it was important to the Hunter-based airline to offer services the region’s travellers needed.
“We are proud and excited to expand our network and give travellers greater choice with the new Adelaide direct route,” Mr Graham said.
To start with they will run flights south at 9.50am Tuesday, 6.35pm Wednesday and 7.50pm on Fridays.
Return services will run at 6.30am Tuesday, 3.15pm Wednesday and 4.30pm Friday.
The new addition is the ninth domestic destination from Williamtown.
Newcastle Airport chief executive Peter Cock said the new route was a win for inbound and outbound tourism.
“Community demand for the Adelaide route has been very strong and we are thrilled to be working with FlyPelican and Adelaide Airport to deliver this direct service to passengers,” he said.
“This is another step for us in creating the airport the region deserves.”
Adelaide Airport managing director Mark Young said they were looking forward to the service starting in March, pointing to the Hunter’s wineries and defence focus as similarities with the new stop.
“Newcastle has been one of our largest unserved markets and we’ve been keen to secure a service between our two cities for some time,” Mr Young said.
Fares will begin from $249 including taxes.
