The worldwide event has grown to such an extent that bands and labels release limited edition records created to mark the day.
In the Illawarra, David Bowie and Led Zeppelin are tipped to be the carrots leading music enthusiasts to queue outside record stores on Saturday.
Special releases and live music will be found at four local stores –Franks Wild Years and Urge in Thirroul; Johnny The Fox in Kiama; and Music Farmers in Wollongong.
“There have been Bowie releases most years for Record Store Day and they've always proved one of the most popular. There is a lot of his catalogue that has been hard to get and recordings previously unreleased so the fans love that,” Jeb Taylor of Music Farmers Wollongong said.
“Led Zeppelin is a 7" single, they never released many singles back in the day so it makes it a buit more unique, they have a very dedicated fan base who like to collect everything they release.”
Wollongong stoner rockers Tumbleweed are also releasing a one off 7” of their biggest single Daddy Longlegs, and will follow it up with a free gig at Music Farmers at 5pm Saturday.
