Amber Lawrence is determined to combine motherhood and country music

For she too will soon attempt to combine the contrasting lifestyles of late-night feeds and late-night gigs.

In August Lawrence, 40, will welcome her first child with fiance Martin Newman. The birth of her son will cap off an amazing couple of years for the Sydney musician, who had famously been unlucky in love before she met her marketer partner over dating app Tinder in 2016.

“For me, finding true love was the most important thing first off,” Lawrence says. “I spent many years with the wrong person which meant I had to hope and pray that later in life [I’d meet someone], and I’m not that old, but I didn’t get married in my 20s.

“I was in my late 30s when I met my fiance and I feel so lucky about that. Then we were able to start a family and that’s something we feel so privileged about.

“Music took priority for a long time in my life and it will always be something I want as a priority, but right now family and love and marriage, that’s my priority.”

Lawrence will take four weeks off following the birth of her son as she’s scheduled to perform at the Deniliquin Ute Muster on September 28. Her mother or mother-in-law will be a welcome companion on the road.

“It’s hard when you love your job,” she says. “I’m not excited about getting time off work.

“When you love your job it’s like how do I do both things? Being a good mother is priority No.1, but also not say goodbye to music.”

That’s why the eight-time Golden Guitar winner has looked to Britt for advice. Britt gave birth to her son Hank in December and has continued working in music and as a caretaker publican of the Silverton Hotel.

Fellow country musician Fanny Lumsden is also preparing to become a mother.

“Last year I toured with Catherine Britt and Fanny Lumsden and it turned out we all fell pregnant within six months of each other, so we’re on a group chat and we ask questions of each other all the time,” Lawrence says.

“Catherine has led the way and been a great role model.”

Contrary to popular belief, pregnancy has provided creative benefits. Earlier this year Lawrence spent three weeks in Nashville writing songs for her sixth album, and her bundle of joy meant she avoided some of the usual trappings of the music city.

“It was a totally different Nashville experience for me,” she says. “For me Nashville is all about the bars and I was kind of like ‘I’ll go to bed now’ and it was much easier actually because I just woke up feeling great every day.

“I was able to write well and sing songs, so it was good. I came home with lots of good songs and a couple I’m really excited about.”
