In a message to local audiences and advertisers, editor Heath Harrison said offering subscriptions for unlimited website access gave regular online readers a way to support the Herald.
“We are proud to say that our local journalism is valued by our community,” Harrison said. “For more than 150 years, the Newcastle Herald has been telling the stories of this region.
“It's stimulated local debate, questioned local authority, championed local causes ... celebrated local wins, commiserated local losses.
“It's what we're all about - local stories, local people, local issues and local events. And it's why we're proud to say that we are the Voice of the Hunter. Subscriptions for website access will help us continue that mission.
“From today we are giving online readers a way to support us to continue providing the quality local journalism they trust and the local news and sport coverage they want.
