The NSW government has committed $12 million to upgrade the intersections at Northcott Drive and Kahibah Road after finding them to be ‘Hunter pinch points’ where motorists experience queuing and traffic delays.
The intersections currently see around 6000 vehicles per hour.
The design involves an extension of the right turn lanes on City Road for users to turn into Kahibah Road and Northcott Drive, and a new left turn lane from City Road into Kahibah Road.
“These upgrades will improve road user safety, traffic flow, pedestrian access and support economic growth by increasing road capacity,” Parliamentary Secretary to the Premier Scott Farlow said.
The proposal also features safer pedestrian facilities at both sites, including a new crossing across Northcott Drive.
Public submissions can be made until 5pm on March 1, 2019.
Although work on the intersections is not expected to commence until 2020, the announcement comes at a time when City Road at Merewether is facing increased congestion due to closed lanes and a reduced speed limit of 40km/h for road upgrades.
