LAKE Macquarie residents are being urged to book early if they plan to take advantage of the compost give-away at the weekend of October 19 and 20.

That's when the council will fill residents' utes and trailers with free compost processed at Awaba from its kerbside food and garden waste collections.
There will be six collection sessions - three each on the Saturday and Sunday, from 9am to 10.30am; from 10.30am to noon; and from 12.30pm to 3.30pm.
Council's waste services manager Paul Collins said giving compost to residents closed the loop on food and garden waste produced in Lake Macquarie.
"We want to share the compost in a way that helps local gardens grow, so we are giving away one ute or trailer load per household," Mr Collins said.
"Staff will load the compost onto residents' trailers or utes.
"Council will continue to give away compost to residents throughout the year at a number of events. "
Operated by Remondis Group, the Lake Macquarie Organics Resource Recovery Facility has been processing organic waste collected from kerbside green bins since July last year, converting it into high quality, Australian-standard, pasteurised compost.
Mr Collins said up to 44,000 tonnes of food and garden waste could be diverted from landfill each year.
Mr Collins reminded people attending the giveaway that all trailers and other vehicles receiving compost had to be covered before leaving the site and when driving on public roads.
The giveaway will take place at the Lake Macquarie Organics Resource Recovery Facility, located within the Awaba Waste Management Facility, at 367 Wilton Road, Awaba.
