The former Freeman of the City of Newcastle and Citizen of the Year recipient will spend at least four years and six months behind bars.
Lawrence, 77, showed no emotion as Judge Tim Gartelmann handed down the sentence in a packed Newcastle District Court on Thursday.
Lawrence's victim Ben Giggins was among those who sat in the packed public gallery.
Lawrence, who was the second-most senior Anglican in the Newcastle diocese, was found guilty and convicted on charges of sexual intercourse without consent and indecent assault on a person under 16 following a Judge alone trial in June.
