Rugby Union: Newcastle representative coach Scott Coleman backs Wildfires bid for Shute Shield

Coleman feels the time is right for a Wildfires squad to test themselves in the state capital again, two decades on from their last stint between 1995 and 1999, with the current season already severly impacted and still on hold because of the global coronavirus pandemic.

The opportunity has arisen because Shute Shield officials want to increase the 11-team roster by one to avoid byes in an abbreviated campaign.

"I've said we should do it," Coleman said.

"If there was ever a year to do it, this is it because the local competition is already messed up.

"It would give us a little taste and see if we're up for it.

"But it would be important to tread lightly and work with local clubs to make everyone part of it."

In a video posted to social media on Sunday, Sydney Rugby Union chairman Phillip Parsons confirmed Shute Shield was aiming for a 12-club competition in 2020. The slated start date is July 25 with a grand final under lights on November 14.

NHRU president Bill Clifton told the Newcastle Herald on Friday the Wildfires were one of the candidates. Penrith, who dropped out in 2018, shaped as the other.

Details about how many sides are required on game day have yet to be released.

Coleman, also coach of five-time defending premiers Hamilton, said Newcastle filling all four grades and colts could prove difficult because of the affect on the local competition but a first XV would be more attainable.

The NHRU board are expected to discuss the matter this week.
