Olympic coach Harmonie Attwill told the Newcastle Herald on Monday the former W-League defender would not finish this season but the extent of the injury was still unknown. Day has had her fair share of injuries already with back-to-back knee reconstructions in 2015 and 2016.
Emerging Jets blow
Midfielder Paige Kingston-Hogg will miss the W-League season after sustaining a knee injury playing for the Emerging Jets in NPL NSW Women's on July 19.
Kingston-Hogg's W-League debut came at the start of several appearances for the Jets last season but she is headed for knee surgery and will be out for the next 12 months.
"It's obviously very unfortunate news for Paige," Emerging Jets coach Ash Wilson, who finished last W-League season as the Jets coach, said. "She was a very integral part of our midfield. She's maturing as a player and had come off the back of having some really positive opportunities in W-League and was looking forward to what we could do with her next season."
The Emerging Jets lost 4-1 to Manly in NPL NSW Women's at Cromer Park on Sunday and are away to Sydney University this weekend.
Magic change
The Newcastle Herald understands Adriana Jones will no longer play for Broadmeadow Magic after the former W-League striker and WPL club parted ways.
Busy period
Magic and Thornton face tough fortnights in which they both play five matches. The two sides are set to meet each other on August 11 in a midweek clash.
Their round-five games, which were washed out last Sunday, have been rescheduled for next week. Magic play Adamstown at Adamstown Oval on August 6 and the Redbacks host Olympic on August 5.
Promising signs
Warners Bay finished what coach Craig Atkins described as a character-building week at the top of the WPL ladder.
The Panthers took six points from a possible nine, moving from sixth spot with three points to nine points and onto equal footing with ladder leaders Olympic.
Olympic hold first position with a superior goal differential.
American star signing Jen Hoy has had immediate impact, scoring in both outings for Warners Bay. But Annika D'Amico's injury time winner against New Lambton on Saturday also earned praise from Atkins.
"I played Annie in a different spot with Jen at nine," Atkins said. "She was nervous but she did a great job. It's a tough going up and back [out wide] and at times I could see she was hunched over. I said look what happened, you made a run at the end, took a touch, beat the keeper to the ball and had a nice finish, so she should take lots of confidence out of that."
Eagles steel
It was another tough day at the office for the Eagles, who remain winless after five games. They conceded seven minutes into 12 minutes of injury time in a 2-1 loss to Warners Bay but coach Brad Jones could not fault his central defensive pairing.
"That's our season at the end of the day," Jones said of the result. "We conceded in the 89th against Magic after playing good football. At the end of the day, I thought the girls were the better team.
"I thought our defensive pairing [of Kaitlin Radstaak and Ellen Darby] did a fantastic job on Jen [Hoy] ... I didn't think they exposed us too much."
