Rugby union: Hunter trio go from touch footy to Wallaroos squad

Now they are a chance of playing together for the Wallaroos at the 2021 Women's Rugby World Cup.

The Hunter trio are part of a 33-strong Wallaroos squad to attend a training camp in Canberra starting Tuesday.

"I played in a primary school touch team with Ash and we won the NSW championships," Stewart said. "Layne and I also played touch footy together. We have all known each other forever. To be going into a Wallaroos camp together is really cool."

Stewart has international experience, having represented Australia A at the 2019 Oceania Championships in Fiji, where she scored an incredible four tries in a 27-5 win over Samoa.

Since then, the powerhouse winger has won a second Super W title with the NSW and was part of the Randwick side which went down to Sydney University in the Jack Scott Cup final.

The 20-year-old was in the NSW Country squad which won the Chikarovski Cup earlier this month but she did not play due to a knee issue.

"I had fluid in my knee but it's all good now," she said. "I'm ready to rock. You obviously try to learn from the other girls, but now that I have some experience under my belt I'm trying to stamp my mark. I want that No.14 jumper."

Walker, a tackle busting centre, and Morgan (halfback) played key roles for NSW Country, which came off the back of strong Super W campaigns for the Rebels and Tahs.

"It's my first time at a Wallaroos camp, which is exciting," Walker said."Obviously, I would like to be in the World Cup squad next year, but it's all about gaining experience. If I do well at this camp,hopefully it leads to more opportunities."

Walker has also been troubled by a knee injury, but is fine now.

"I did my meniscus at the start of the Jack Scott Cup," she said. "It was an ongoing thing, but I had four weeks off the end of the jack Scott Cup and it seems to be better now. I did rehab for four weeks - In the gym and doing a little bit of straight line running. Now I am doing yoyos and cardio fitness."

Selection caps a busy month for Stewart, who relocated from Nelson Bay to Sydney this month and started a new job.
