At 10.30pm Saturday a delivery driver was traveling west on John Street at Belmont North in his van, when an owl flew through the open driver's window and collided with his head.
According to police the impact stunned the 21-year-old driver from Birmingham Gardens and caused the van to collide with a parked car. The accident resulted in considerable damage to both vehicles.
Witnesses said the driver, fearing he would be attacked for a second time, jumped from his vehicle to escape the rogue bird.
Luckily one of the witnesses snapped a photograph of the owl seated on the dash of the delivery van before police arrived on scene.
"Thankfully there was photographic evidence otherwise we never would have believed the story," a statement from Lake Macquarie police said.
"The owl failed to exchange particulars and made good his escape before the police arrived on scene. If you recognise the owl, please contact your nearest police station."
