W-League: Newcastle Jets 'disappointed' to miss points first up against Western Sydney Wanderers

The Jets will look to bounce back when they host Sydney FC at McDonald Jones Stadium on Friday having gone down 2-1 to the Wanderers at Blacktown despite producing twice as many shots as their opponents.

Newcastle forward Tara Andrews scored just after the half-time break but Western Sydney's Rosie Galea netted a brace either side.

Wilson was able to take the positives out of the first-up performance, but still felt like it was a missed opportunity for the Jets.

"When you look at the stats it was 22-9 in our favour for shots," Wilson told the Newcastle Herald on Sunday.

"At the end of the day we gifted them a goal in the first half and we could have handled the second one a bit better.

"I think we did enough to get a point and based on the second half alone we might have even done enough to get three points.

"But there's lots of positives to take away in terms of chances created, out attacking play and building into the game.

"Just a couple of errors really cost us and at this level against a team like Wanderers they make you pay."

The Jets held a recovery session on Sunday and have three training runs this week before meeting the Sky Blues in Newcastle.

"It's a shorter training week and we've got to turn our attention to Sydney now. We can't dwell on it or get caught up with if onlys," Wilson said.

Galea made the most of a wayward pass from Jets defender Cassidy Davis, took one touch and finished from the top of the 18-yard box to give the home team a 1-0 advantage in the 21^st minute.

Andrews equalised from short range in the 46^th minute, pouncing on a dropped ball following Sophie Harding's initial shot.

Galea put Wanderers ahead again in the 51^st minute, winning the race to a loose ball after Leena Khamis' strike had been tipped onto the crossbar by Jets goalkeeper Claire Coelho.

Newcastle were denied in the 66^th minute when Andrews' free-kick was saved by Western Sydney goalkeeper Courtney Newbon before defender Caitlin Cooper put her body on the line to help clear the bouncing ball.

NNSW Women's Premier League player of the year Jemma House, who signed with the Jets last month, had her first taste run in the national competition when she came off the bench with nine minutes remaining.
