Newcastle: Sun forecast for Wednesday after week of severe rain

The Bureau of Meteorology has forecast temperatures of 28 degrees Celsius in Newcastle, Maitland, Nelson Bay and most parts of the Lower Hunter.

While there is a chance of a shower in the Upper Hunter, there is a "near zero chance elsewhere".

The reprieve from the constant deluge of rain will give local communities time to assess the damage caused by the severe weather.

"While the rain may move on, the flood event is far from over," a statement from the NSW RFS said.

"A lot of work to do over coming days and weeks."

Mid Coast Council mayor David West said on Monday that the damage from the major flood event across his local government area could run into "hundreds of millions", with other councils yet to fully assess the damage.

The significant rainfall smashed many recordings. Mangrove Mountain received 112.9mm of rain in the 24 hours to 9am Monday, Williamtown had 65.22mm in the same period, while 49mm fell at Newcastle and 48mm was recorded at Cooranbong.
