A 39-year-old southwest Sydney man has been charged after a puppy was burned alive in a cage, forcing police to euthanise the animal.

The six-month-old puppy was found on Friday in a cage on the balcony of the man's Lurnea unit after allegedly being set alight.
It had suffered severe burns and was euthanised by police.
The fire also spread through the Wonga Road unit, causing significant damage and prompting the evacuation of the man's neighbours.
The man has been charged with aggravated animal cruelty and damaging a property by fire.
He'll appear at Liverpool Local Court on Friday.
