The magnitude 5.9 earthquake centred in the regional Victorian town of Mansfield, but the effect was felt far and wide.
Houses in Melbourne shook and movement could be felt at Canberra's Parliament House and Sydney's CBD.
Newcastle residents also reported feeling the quake.
Sue Chivers is currently staying at Swansea Lakeside Caravan Park and said she was having a morning cup of tea in her caravan just after 9am when she suddenly felt dizzy.
"I got up and felt movement," she said.
"It was like a vibration."
IN THE NEWS:
She had the news screening on TV and saw there had been an earthquake in Victoria which made her realise what had happened.
Ms Chivers was living in the Blue Mountains at the time of the 1989 Newcastle earthquake and said this felt minor compared to the tremor she experienced during that incident.
Staff at the McDonald Jones Homes office on Honeysuckle Drive also felt the building shake.
McDonald Jones Homes staff member Brett Lavaring was in the building at the time of the trembling and said the experience was "surreal".
"We felt the building move," he said.
"It felt like it was significant."
He said about 30 or 40 staff members were in the building at the time, and quickly evacuated out to a safe place where staff from the nearby Hit 106.9 and Triple M radio station officers were already gathering.
Mr Lavaring pointed out the building is in line with the old Newcastle Workers Club, which was the site of the most damage in the 1989 Newcastle Earthquake.
He said the building manager went inside and conducted a walk through of the building before staff were cleared to return.
