Candidate for the Seat of Hunter James Thomson said he recently spoke with Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce about securing funds for the project after its $10 million Building Better Regions application was unsuccessful.
"The Gallery is not in my electorate, but as I seek to double the tourism in my area of Hunter, we need a range of attractions in the broader region in fields including sport, arts and music," he said.
"Local pieces like The Strapper by Sir William Dobell need to be on display so that people keen to visit the art gallery and spend their tourism dollars in the region will also come up the valley to experience the oldest and best wine region in the world."

Mr Thomson called on the government to reconsider its funding decision.
"All people across NSW deserve access to quality arts and culture no matter where they live and that includes the Newcastle and Hunter region, and construction at the gallery would present the perfect opportunity for its collections to be shared with regional galleries while the work is undertaken."
