Robbery and Serious Crime Squad detectives made the appeal on Friday, calling for information after the September 5 incident.
Police were called to a shopping centre about 1.40am that day after reports of a ram raid a short time before.
"Initial inquiries by officers attached to Lake Macquarie Police District revealed a forklift had driven through the front doors of the shopping complex before picking up an ATM machine then exiting the centre," police said in a statement.
Investigators found remnant of the ATM at a nearby construction site.
The forklift was found dumped in bushland.
Police set up crime scenes around both pieces of equipment, with specialist forensic police called in to comb them for clues.
The incident was escalated to the State Crime Command and is now under the investigation of Strike Force Murrabit.

Robbery and Serious Crime Squad Commander, Detective Superintendent Andrew Koutsoufis, urged anyone with information about the forklift's movements on the night of the ram raid to come forward.
He said detectives were eager to identify two men in the footage who may be able to help police progress their inquiries.
"This was a particularly brazen and destructive robbery which caused thousands of dollars of damage and no doubt would've taken a certain degree of planning from those involved," Detective Superintendent Koutsoufis said.
"It was also unique given the use of a forklift.
"CCTV depicts two men involved in an altercation with three other persons a short time before this ram raid took place. Detectives are seeking the identity of these two men; one of whom notably has his face uncovered.
"If anyone saw the forklift, or the occupant or occupants of this machine on the night of the robbery, please come forward and contact police."
