The 978 square metre block was bought during the couple's engagement period and was located next door to Mr Capper's aunty.

The rest of the street was bushland.

On weekends the pair would drive down from Kurri Kurri and spend two nights in Mr Capper's aunty's shed while working on the property.

By 1954 they had moved into the semi-finished home, where they raised three children.

Sixty-seven years later, the three-bedroom house will hit the market for the first time with a guide of $750,000 to $800,000.

"It's a bit bittersweet [to see it sell]," daughter Debbie Street said.

"Mum's now at Redhead Gardens [age care facility]. She's happy and she's met some other Belmont ladies in there so it does have a happy ending."

Mrs Capper had lived in the house on her own since her husband passed in 1990.

Mrs Street said her father was a fitter and turner who could, and did, "make anything".

She recalled many family holidays spent on a 24-foot wooden cruiser he had salvaged as a burnt-out shell and spent five years rebuilding in the backyard.

Named 'Gwyn-De' after his wife and daughter, the vessel had two beds, a kitchen and a motor he had repurposed from a Holden.

"That was his pride and joy, he loved the water and fishing, that's why they moved from Kurri," Mrs Street said.

"We could go and have a few nights on the lake over Christmas - he didn't like the traffic and the crowds so that was our Christmas holiday on the lake behind Pulbah Island.

"His boat was well known on the lake ... many a time it got stolen, kids would swim out and it was found on the other side of the lake.

"Sometimes in really bad storms it would break its mooring and it would just blow around the lake.

"We didn't have the phone on then, the police would come over and say 'hey Bryce, your boat's over in Toronto' and we'd have to go and get it."

Even as the family prepares to part with the home, many of its wonderful legacies will carry on into the future.

"Mum had a neighbour on the opposite side of Haig Street ... they began a friendship that still goes today," Mrs Street said.

"Mum's 89 and Mary is 92.

"Every Thursday they would share recipes, talk about the kids.

"Even to this day, every Thursday they'll still have that cup of tea and solve the problems of the world."
