Police have busted a man travelling from Perth to eastern Australia in a hire car with $1.8 million in cash.

The man was driving on the Great Eastern Highway near Southern Cross, 200km west of Kalgoorlie, when he was stopped by police on May 4 at 2.20pm.
Officers searched the car and allegedly found the cash inside a duffle bag in the boot.

Detective Acting Senior Sergeant Steve Carter from the Transnational and Serious Organised Crime Squad said a 36-year-old man was arrested and charged with property laundering.

"The man, who is a resident of the eastern states, was brought back to Perth with the cash and subsequently charged," he said.
"The transportation of illicit commodities such as cash and drugs continues to be a key focus of the Transnational and Serious Organised Crime Squad and we'll continue to investigate any instances such as this," he said.

The man will face court in Perth at a later date.
