Not only is it a chance to own a piece of American land without a hectic mortgage, it also comes with that full, early-2000s nostalgic Round The Twist experience. What's not to like?
So why are these lighthouses being given away? Advancements in GPS navigation systems, have rendered the historic lighthouse technology obsolete and out out-of-use.

Since Congress passed the National Historic Lighthouse Preservation Act in 2000, up to 150 lighthouses have been re-purposed.
Another 80 have been given away, with about 70 of these auctioned for a combined total of $10 million.
In 2023, the General Services Administration is offering six lighthouses free to willing organisations or members of the public who will be tasked with preserving the structural history.
Though no longer mission critical, the century-old lighthouses continue to be popular tourist attractions.
The 10 lighthouses on offer for donation or discount auction are:
- Plymouth Gurnet Light, Massachusetts
- Nobska Lighthouse, Massachusetts
- Lynde Point Lighthouse, Connecticut
- Penfield Reef Lighthouse, Connecticut
- Stratford Shoal Light, New York
- Little Mark Island, Maine
- Monument Lighthouse, Maine
- Erie Harbour North Pier Lighthouse, Pennsylvania
- Harbour West Pierhead Light, Cleveland
- Keweenaw Waterway Lower Entrance Light, Michigan
