Concerns for Brisbane woman Julia-Mary Lane were raised by her roommate in Kimberley, a city in British Columbia, on June 11 local time.
Janet Hamilton issued a plea on a local community Facebook page after she hadn't heard from Ms Lane.
Ms Hamilton said her Australian housemate, known as JM, was visiting Kimberley for a week and planned to go hiking most days.
Ms Lane's family later confirmed in a Facebook post she had died in "an unfortunate hiking accident".
"We have lost our beautiful baby girl... please allow us 24 hours to process this sad news. The Lane family."

Ms Hamilton paid tribute to her roommate who she described as "a truly beautiful soul".
"I feel honoured to have spent time with her this past week, as she was a joy to be around."
Kimberley police have confirmed a missing Australian hiker had been found dead.
"The death is not considered suspicious," a spokesperson said.
"Search and Rescue, along with the [Royal Canadian Mounted Police] Police Dog Services, and the use of a drone, were engaged in the search."
Police found Ms Lane's car parked at Bear Lake, near Kimberley.
On June 8 Ms Lane had posted in a local page for hikers saying she was visiting from Canmore in Alberta and was looking to join others on a hike.
"I am comfortable hiking solo but would prefer to go with a group to minimise bear risk of course," she wrote.
"I have been hiking in Canmore and surrounding national parks the past few months so am fairly experienced, love a scramble, fine with steep elevation and scree, can go at a decent pace, and quite like to trail run down on the odd occasion."
The post was later flooded with well wishes and prayers as news she was missing was shared.
Kimberley is known for its large nature park and recreational activities such as hiking, fishing and kayaking.
