But every now and then a restoration is done so badly it's hilarious.
Here are a few of the best (or worst) art restorations.
'Behold the Man', Spain
In 2012, self-titled restorer Cecilia Giménez tried her hand at restoring Elas Garca Martnez famed portrait of Jesus Christ.
The result has made the Spanish artwork one of the most famous art restoration fails in history. It's been unfortunately dubbed 'monkey Jesus' all over the internet.
Behold the man, indeed!

'The Virgin Mary And Baby Jesus', Canada
Vandals knocked one of the heads off the sculpture outside the Sudbury Catholic church, leaving Saint Mary holding a decapitated child...
In 2015, local artist Heather Wise offered to fix the sculpture.
But this probably wasn't the desired outcome!
'The Immaculate Conception of Los Venerables', Spain
In 2020, a private art collector paid a furniture restorer to clean the baroque portrait.
Unfortunately, it was destroyed with two restoration attempts failing to bring the work back to its original glory.
'Saint George', Spain
A local teacher, in 2018, gave the sculpture of St George and the dragon some well-intentioned colouring.
Fortunately, the cartoonish veneer was reversed and the artwork was successfully 'unrestored'.
'The Anyu Buddha', China
The 1,000-year-old Song dynasty Buddha sculpture also fell victim to some ill-advised brushwork.
In 1995, local villagers re-coloured the Buddha resulting in some questionable aesthetics.
