In a phone video circulating online members of the public can be heard yelling at the officer; "stop hitting him".
"Are they allowed to do that? That is wrong," one person says.
The officer was responding to a crash in Strathpine, north of Brisbane, on June 22 when police say he was confronted by a "highly agitated male driver inside a vehicle".
"Police will allege the man was drinking from a wine bottle and was under the influence of the substance," a Queensland Police spokesperson said.
"After the officer attempted to take the bottle away several times, it was allegedly thrown towards him."
The driver was told to remain in the car but he continued to kick the door into the officer, the spokesperson said.
The officer then "used physical force to contain the man in the vehicle".
"The man continued to attempt to leave the car and after several verbal warnings, a Taser was deployed by police," the spokesperson said.
