Mr Musk, who is Twitter's executive chair, said the temporary limits were addressing "extreme levels of data scraping and system manipulation".
The limits were first announced on July 2 as 6000 posts per day for verified accounts, 600 for unverified accounts and 300 for new unverified users.
But in two further tweets Mr Musk upped the limits until settling on 10,000 for verified, 1000 for unverified and 500 for new unverified users.
Users are hit with a "rate limit exceeded" notice on the app and are blocked from loading new tweets.
Mr Musk later tweeted the post had received a record view count and many users were sharing their dissatisfaction with the decision online.
Some users accused the app of pressuring people to buy the monthly subscription called Twitter Blue to be able to see more posts.

Others asked Mr Musk to leave the app as it was.
