Nikola Golem, the 48-year-old stepson of Tomislav Nemes, has been charged with murder after police found human remains in a Gold Coast home on April 17.

Officers found the Mr Nemes's body, with no observable injuries, in bed and believe he could have been dead for more than 12 months.

"The body was in an advanced state of decomposition," Detective Acting Inspector Mark Proctor said.
"It did have a mummified look ... but there was absolutely no attempt to preserve the body in any way. It wasn't wrapped or anything like that."

The arrest follows a renewed police appeal as detectives revealed Mr Nemes' wife and stepson lived alongside his remains for more than a year, failing to disclose the death to family or the authorities.
Mr Nemes moved from ACT to Queensland in 2018 and settled in a Benowa home with his wife and stepson.

A relative of Mr Nemes requested the police perform a welfare check in April after his stepson allegedly claimed the 69-year-old was unwell and would not see visitors.
The case was mentioned before Southport Magistrates Court on August 23 and adjourned until September 22.
