What to expect this snow season after last year's 'fizzer'

Snow forecaster Pete 'The Frog' Taylor has been independently predicting snowfall on his website Snowatch for almost thirty years.

The Wollongong local will start his daily predictions later this month.

Mr Taylor described last year's ski season as "one of, if not the worst on record".

"The snow didn't really get going until late June and by early July things were looking great with a decent cover," he said.

"August, which is normally peak season, was a bit of a fizzer, with plenty of cold fronts but not enough cold."

Due to "summer-like" September weather, the 2023 snow season ended unusually early with many resorts closing runs a month before schedule.

Looking ahead to the 2024 season, Mr Taylor said that "it's paramount we get cold nights leading into the season to get a nice base going".

April 9's dusting was a good start with Falls Creek and Hotham in Victoria recording up to 4 centimetres of snowfall and temperatures down to -2 degrees.

"With only 9 weeks till our opening day and less until we start making snow ahead of winter it's great to see the temperatures dropping and snow falling," Falls Creek Ski Lifts general manager Richard Philips said.

"The village is looking beautiful with a dusting of snow and ready to welcome guests back to the resort on 8 June."

The snow season traditionally begins in June.
