The ABC host, who has helmed Media Watch for 11 years, confirmed in a post on X that he would finish up with the show although there was "lots of fun to be had before then".
Barry, 72, told the ABC on June 13 it was "a great privilege to host Media Watch and I've enjoyed it enormously".
"But I've been in the hot seat for 11 years and it's time to give someone else a go."
Barry first presented Media Watch in 2000 and then returned in 2013 to become the show's longest serving host.
An ABC spokesperson said the award-winning journalist "would leave the show at the end of the year with a track record of independent commentary, analysis and robust discussion about the media industry and its ethics - or lack thereof".
The ABC said it would announce a new host for the show soon.
