Wheeler, a substitute in the 86th minute, was a welcome addition to the pitch, delighting the 20,495 people at McDonald Jones Stadium - a record for the Matildas in Newcastle.
The Newcastle Herald's Max Mason-Hubers was on hand to capture the colour and excitement of the crowd for the match, of which coach Tony Gustavsson said "Clare was the game changer".
"The key to that goal was Clare Wheeler's tackle. We said we need to be more physical, win our fight plan, our one-on-one duels," he said
